The 2012 Jarvis Kaplan Cup Inter-Provincial Tournament kicked off in Pretoria on Monday with over 200 squash fanatics descending on the Capital.
The A section matches were contested at Pretoria Country Club and the results went according to script with the favoured teams all recording comfortable victories.
Defending ladies champions Western Province beat Easterns 4 – 1 but their No.1 and South Africa’s top ranked female Siyoli Waters went down 3 games to 2 in an epic battle against Englishwoman Lauren Siddall. Sacha West also produced an upset beating Easterns No.2 Angie Clifton-Parks by the same score-line.
2012 champions Central Gauteng won their fixture against Eastern Province 3 – 2. The Landman twins has earlier given the team from Nelson Mandela Bay a 2 – 1 lead before Diana Haynes and Wispa No.21 Emma Beddoes from England wrapped up the encounter.
It is generally a two-horse race but Northerns, who have acquired the services of Milnay Louw, are genuine contenders this year. The hosts are 4 – 0 up against SA Country Districts with the final result pending after Cheyna Tucker was injured during her match.
On the men’s side, 2011 champions KwaZulu-Natal recorded a dominant 5 – 0 victory with only one game being dropped against Easterns. KZN’s Hungarian import Mark Krajcsak showed his worth with a 3 – 0 win over the up-and-coming JP Brits.
Title hopefuls Western Province also won 5 – 0 losing only two games out of 17. No.1 Shaun le Roux fought back after losing his opener to England’s Tim Garner for a 3 – 1 win.
Central Gauteng faced Northerns and produced a 4 – 1 triumph. Mike Tootill clinched the points for the Joburg side after a 3 – 2 thriller with Craig Ruane. Thoboki Moholo took them to 4 – 0 before Englishman Eddie Charlton lost 3 – 1 to Zambia’s Kelvin Ndhlovu in the No.1’s match-up.
