Doha WSF Men’s World Junior Team Championships, Day One, Fri 13th July
After the excitement of the individual finals it was down to business for the Boys’ Teams today. Two days of Pool matches will determine who plays who in the playoff stages, with most of the teams having three pool matches to play over two days.
There was just one upset result as Argentina, who came very close to upsetting Kuwait in their first match of the day, beat Switzerland 2-1 in a thrilling finish.
Apart from that it all went the way of the seeded teams, with the top three of Egypt, Pakistan and England all recording two 3-0 wins to pretty much guarantee themselves byes in 1-12 playoff draw.
No problems for most of the seeded teams in their opening matches, as the top three seeds all won 3-0, but Kuwait and Argentina went all the way, with the higher-seeded Kuwaitis scraping through after coming back from 1-2 and 1-6 in the decider.
Pool A:  Egypt 3-0 Switzerland ,  Kuwait 2-1 Argentina
Pool B:  Pakistan 3-0 South Africa ,  New Zealand 3-0 Iraq
Pool C:  England 3-0 Belgium ,  Canada 3-0 Zimbabwe
Australia beat hosts Qatar 2-1 as Rodney Eyles led his team to victory over Geoff Hunt’s charges, two former world champions locking horns.
Abdulla Al Tamimi levelled the match to give the hosts hope, but the Aussies proved too strong in the lower order. India, USA and France all won 3-0 but Hong Kong were taken to a decider by Asian rivals Japan.
Pool D:  India 3-0 Germany ,  Australia 2-1 Qatar
Pool E:  Hong Kong 2-1 Japan
Pool F:  Usa 3-0 Brazil,  France 3-0 Guatemala
Having come so close to beating Kuwait earlier in the day, Argentina went one better to upset Switzerland in their second Pool A match, this time coming through 17-15 in the fourth in the decider.
They’ll need to beat Egypt tomorrow to reach the top twelve, but they’ll still go to bed happy. Iraq took South Africa the distance before Luke Willemse won the decider.
