England’s Sarah Kippax claimed her 9th WSA title – and her second in a row – as she beat top seed Samantha Teran in a marathon final of the inaugural Squash on Fire event in Washington DC.
Kippax, the world number 25 had reached the final with considerably less drama and time on court than top-seeded Teran, the world number 14 from Mexico, but having survived a five-game thriller in the semi-finals Teran’s luck ran out in a final featuring five close games.
Teran led twice, Kippax levelled twice, and the Mexican had match ball at 10-9 in the decider but Kippax took three points in a row to take the game and the title after 80 pulsating minutes.
“Very tight! Very happy!” tweeted an ecstatic winner.
Final: [2] Sarah Kippax (Eng) bt [1] Samantha Teran (Mex)11/8, 6/11, 11/9, 8/11, 12/10 (80m)
